Foundation website and SME ecosystem case study
Caladium supports builders
A responsive foundation website that turns years of SME programs, research, community, leadership, and measurable impact into one clear digital system.
The problem
Caladium Foundation had a broad mission: support African SMEs through education, community, market access, funding, sustainability, research, and leadership development. The challenge was making that scope feel useful instead of scattered.
Different visitors arrive with different intent. A founder wants a practical program. A partner wants credibility. A funder wants proof. A researcher wants signals. The website needed to serve all of them without making the first visit feel heavy.
How might a foundation website explain a large SME support ecosystem while keeping the next step obvious?
The project
Caladium Foundation is built around practical SME growth across Africa. The website presents its work through six program pathways, a community layer, research, impact reporting, board governance, team credibility, and a clear application route for CLSME.
The core product decision was to make the site behave less like an annual-report archive and more like a living ecosystem: understand the mission, pick the right path, see the proof, and join the work.
My role
I worked across site structure, content hierarchy, responsive UX, visual direction, page templates, program storytelling, conversion placement, and interface polish.
The work required editorial discipline: keep the foundation credible and informative, but use short sections, strong images, and repeated decision points so visitors do not get trapped in long institutional copy.
Audience needs
SME founders
Find the right program quickly, understand the benefit, and know how to apply or join the community.
Partners
See the foundation's reach, governance, program model, and ability to deliver practical entrepreneur support.
Ecosystem readers
Access research, impact data, leadership context, and a clear picture of the SME support gap.
Program architecture
The six program areas needed to feel connected but not identical. Each pathway has a clear promise, a distinct audience, and enough detail to support a decision without overwhelming the page.
The structure keeps program discovery simple: an overview page introduces the ecosystem, then individual pages deepen the story around practical outcomes, focus areas, facilitators, readiness, and the final action.
Flagship program
The Caladium SME Bootcamp acts as the foundation's flagship public program, so its page had to carry both urgency and substance. The design pairs strong event photography with direct explanations of what entrepreneurs learn and why it matters.
The page works as a conversion surface for applications, but also as proof of the foundation's operating model: practical learning, expert-led support, peer connection, and real business outcomes.
Impact proof
For a foundation, trust depends on evidence. The impact page gives the mission measurable weight through SME counts, years of activity, funding realities, workforce relevance, and the practical channels where support happens.
The visual decision was to place proof beside human context. Grant moments, event rooms, and entrepreneur-facing statistics make the impact feel concrete rather than abstract.
Research layer
The research page positions Caladium as an institution that learns from real businesses, not only a program organizer. It gives the 2024 Nigerian SME Report and publication archive a clear home inside the wider support ecosystem.
This matters because research strengthens every other part of the site: programs feel more informed, partnerships feel more strategic, and impact claims feel connected to observed SME realities.
Community
The community page gives entrepreneurs a lower-friction way into the ecosystem. Not everyone is ready for a formal program, but many are ready for practical support, peers, mentors, event access, and opportunities.
The page makes that value specific through alumni networks, founder support, mentoring, partnerships, funding exposure, and practical business development.
The visual system
The interface uses a calm institutional base, navy overlays, green action moments, strong serif headlines, rounded cards, and real event imagery. That combination gives the foundation credibility without making the experience feel cold.
Shared page patterns keep the site scalable: hero, proof, pathway cards, people sections, program details, and final action blocks can support new initiatives without needing a redesign every time the foundation expands.
Key design decisions
Lead with real rooms. Event photography makes the work tangible before the visitor reads the details.
Separate the six pathways. Each program gets enough room to explain its audience and outcome, while the overview page keeps the system easy to scan.
Make trust visible. Leadership, board, team, impact, and research pages support the same credibility story from different angles.
Repeat useful actions. Apply, explore programs, join community, and contact pathways appear where the visitor is most likely to make a decision.
Reflection
Caladium Foundation reinforced that nonprofit websites need more than inspiring language. The useful work is in making the system legible: who it serves, what it offers, why it is credible, and what a visitor should do next.
What worked
The site gives the foundation one coherent digital home for programs, impact, community, research, governance, and applications while keeping the visual experience human and image-led.
Next
The next phase would test program selection with founders, add clearer application status states, and use analytics to see which pathways drive the strongest conversion.
